What is redox and how does it relate to free chlorine?
The potential redox (also called ORP: Oxidation-Reduction Potential) is a value that measures the oxidizing capacity of water, i.e., its ability to destroy organic matter, bacteria, viruses and other contaminants. It is expressed in millivolts (mV), and the higher the value, the greater the disinfectant capacity of the water. In the case of pool water, the redox is a reasonably inexpensive option to know, indirectly, if the water has sufficient disinfectant.
A properly disinfected pool should maintain a free chlorine concentration between 1 ppm (part per million) and 2 ppm. If the concentration falls below this threshold, the disinfectant capacity of the water is reduced, increasing the risk of proliferation of microorganisms. On the other hand, if this range is greatly exceeded, the water can become aggressive for the skin, eyes and mucous membranes of bathers, in addition to generating unpleasant odors and deteriorating materials.
Many control systems use redox probes to activate or deactivate chlorine production depending on the actual need for disinfection. Although redox does not measure free chlorine concentration, there is a correlation between mV in water and disinfection capacity.
To establish the appropriate level of redox, the pH level, water temperature and alkalinity level must also be taken into account. In the following table we offer an approximation of the relationship between redox and free chlorine for a pool with temperature 25ºC and alkalinity at 100ppm.

* Adequate free chlorine levels should be between 1 and 2ppm, so it is always recommended to take as a reference the value of 1.5ppm or 2ppm to avoid an excessive drop in the level of free chlorine during the influx of bathers.
