It is expressed in <strong data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"524\">millivolts (mV)<\/strong>: the higher the value, the higher the disinfectant capacity of the water.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"599\" data-end=\"725\">In swimming pools, redox is an inexpensive and indirect way to check if the water has an adequate level of disinfection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"1111\">A properly disinfected pool should maintain a <strong data-start=\"792\" data-end=\"823\">free chlorine<\/strong> level <strong data-start=\"792\" data-end=\"823\">between 1 and 2 ppm<\/strong> (parts per million). Below this threshold, the water loses disinfectant efficacy, which increases the risk of microorganism proliferation. On the contrary, an excess of free chlorine can cause skin, eye and mucous membrane irritations, bad odors and deterioration of materials.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1384\">Although redox does not directly measure the concentration of free chlorine, there is a <strong data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1275\">correlation between the redox potential and the disinfectant capacity of the water<\/strong>, which allows the use of redox probes to automate the dosing of chlorine according to the actual need.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1384\">It has, as a limitation, to be a very sensitive measurement system to parasitic currents or pool conductivity, which makes it a very limited method for salt chlorination, or it will require a more precise calibration or a more controlled redox probe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1685\">To interpret the redox value correctly, other factors such as <strong data-start=\"1486\" data-end=\"1492\">pH<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"1497\" data-end=\"1512\">temperature<\/strong> and water <strong data-start=\"1518\" data-end=\"1533\">alkalinity<\/strong> must also be considered.
